Australia Post is urging all Australians to help their dedicated posties by mailing Christmas cards early this year. In the past, mail volumes have exceeded 50 million items a day in December – almost triple that of other months, but rain, hail or 40 degree heat, the posties ensure the mail is delivered!
Australia Post spokesperson, Gary Highland, said posties are dedicated to ensuring greeting cards reach households across Australia in time for Christmas.
However, with Christmas Day falling on a Tuesday this year, there is concern that people may put off sending their cards to the last minute, leaving little time for family and friends to enjoy them.
“Christmas is a season, not just one day and this year we are encouraging people to make the most of sharing Christmas cheer with family and friends by posting cards as soon as possible,” Mr Highland said.
Australia Post stresses the importance of correctly addressing and clearly writing addresses on Christmas card envelopes including a return address on the reverse - so the recipient knows who it’s from. It is also important to ensure the envelope is properly sealed.
A return address is helpful if the address on the envelope is incorrect and it is undeliverable.
“Australia’s 9000 posties make every effort to resolve incomplete or incorrect addresses to ensure delivery to the right person, but some letters are beyond help. Tens of thousands of Christmas cards never reach their destination and end up in our ‘dead letter’ offices because they are incorrectly addressed and have no return to sender details,” Mr Highland said.
“We find that when people post at the last minute, they often do it in such a rush that they don’t write the address correctly – and sometimes even forget it altogether!”
