Modem Resetting
Modem resetting occurs when postage meters are electronically credited with postage funds by modem. When your meter is low on funds, you simply connect the meter to a telephone line then enter a personal access code followed by the amount of postage you require.
Provided sufficient funds are available, the amount requested is electronically transferred via a secure modem link from a central resetting centre directly to your meter. Modem resetting usually takes less than a minute to complete.
Australia Post has developed strict protocols governing how resetting centres process customers' transactions. All resetting systems undergo rigorous testing by Australia Post to ensure that your privacy and security is protected.
Meter Usage Data
Meter usage data refers to the number and type of letters, parcels and international articles processed by the meter. The meter collects and stores the usage data each time it is used. Then, when the meter is next reset, the data is electronically transferred to Australia Post. Australia Post and postage meter suppliers will ensure that meter usage data is kept private and confidential.
Postage Meter Impression
Australia Post now approves meters with a unique postage impressions for Standard-compliant meters. Postage Meters feature a data matrix symbol containing coded information about the meter.
The new impression is designed for meters using digital printing technology such as thermal ribbon, inkjet or laser printing. The dynamic impression contains variable information such as the date, value of impression, product code, service type and piece count as well as the serial number.

The impression meets the specifications of the current Postage Meter Standard. On 1 February 2005, the Standard changed to require all meters licensed as from that date to print the above mentioned impression. The change in the Standard only affects customers applying for a new postage meter license after the effective date. Customers are be able to continue to operate their machines under the terms of their existing licensing agreement.
Ink
Impressions must be printed using Australia Post approved red fluorescent ink, available from postage meter suppliers.
Considerations for Larger Mailers
High-volume and production mailers should bear the following points in mind when considering metering:
-
Workflow - Metering can assist in reducing manual handling processes. In manual insertion lines, a meter equipped with automatic feeds and scales will automate the feeding, weighing and charging process. This speeds up mail processing times and frees up your staff for other tasks.
-
Physical environment - Installing a meter need not disrupt your existing work environment or necessitate the installation of extra phone lines. Some meter models have detachable bases, allowing the meter to be reset in a different location to where mail is prepared.
