Charity Mail - Helping you help others

Different causes, one connection

Australia Post recognises that mail is an important medium for charities to acquire donors. It helps make the connection between those in need and people who care.

To keep that connection as strong as possible, Australia Post has introduced Charity Mail pricing for bulk mail lodgements. It’s a pricing category that provides lower prices for mailings from income tax exempt charities through the PreSort Letters Service. Charity Mail is our way of saying thank you for the significant contributions charities make to the community.

Making every cent count

At Australia Post, we understand that for organisations in the fundraising industry, every cent counts.  The money saved from Charity Mail could be spent on extended reach or additional mailings.  There are many ways to give.  The Charity Mail rate is our way of giving something back to charities for all of the work that they do.

Good things come in small packages

Charity Mail pricing is only available for mailings of barcoded PreSort small letters.  Therefore, all mailings must meet PreSort conditions to access Charity Mail rates.  A minimum of 300 small letters per lodgement applies.  For more information about barcoding your mail, please visit our barcoding area.

Mailing conditions

To ensure that only approved organisations can access Charity Mail rates, it is mandatory to include an inscription on all mailings.  The inscription "CM" should be followed by the eight-digit identification number.  For example

CM 12345678

The Charity Mail inscription may be printed on the front or back of envelopes, or within the address block.  The CM number also needs to be included on the PreSort Lodgement form.  (More information about address block specifications and other requirements for addressing can be found in the PreSort Letters Service Guide).

Mailing Content

There are no content-based restrictions for mailings that contain material entirely from charities.  Contents can include advertising and promotional material, greeting cards, newsletters, and even statements and invoices.  Material from other organisations may also be included, provided that they support charitable causes and the material included is incidental to the main purpose of the mailing.

How to register

To receive Charity Mail prices, organisations must be able to demonstrate that they have been endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) as an income tax exempt charity.  A copy of the 'Notification of endorsement for charity tax concessions" letter issued by the ATO must be attached with the Charity Mail application form.

The application form is available for download below.

Charity Mail Application Form (47kb, pdf  - Adobe Acrobat is required to read this file).

A letter of approval from Australia Post will be sent within five business days from receipt of the application.  It will contain an eight-digit identification number, granting access to the Charity Mail service.  Charities will need to quote this number in the space provided on the PreSort Lodgement document to receive Charity Mail rates on their mailings.
