There is a growing public awareness of the impact business has on the community and companies are now recognising the importance of being a good corporate citizen. Post, as an organisation dedicated to servicing the Australian community, has understood its obligation to the community by delivering a quality service at fair and equitable price. It has done so in a manner that supports the environment, its people and the community.
So while the concept of an organisation becoming “sustainable” or “socially responsible” has become popular over recent years Post has been implementing a program of sustainability over many years.
Post has been providing postal services to the Australian community since 1809. Post has grown considerably in size from an organisation that had one Postmaster General and one postman in 1828 to one that currently employs in excess of 35,000 full and part time staff and 10,000 people in rural and remote areas. As Australia has grown so has the postal organisation, more than one million customers now pass through out post offices each day. We deliver approximately 20 million articles of mail per day, five days a week to over 98% of Australian addresses including rural and remote regions.
Post as a community based organisation has been socially active over a long period of time. This has been recognised through the various reputation indexes, by its winning the 1998 Banksia Award and through our various community programs such as Cards and Cartridges for Planet Ark, Australian Arts and Culture, Education, and our commitment to rural and regional Australia.
| Australia Post has a number of well-established sustainability programs in place, and we have been actively reducing our impact on the environment for many years through our Environment Management System participation |
| in the Federal Government's Greenhouse Challenge program and a diverse range of community and staff programs. |
It’s not only our services but our people who have forged the link with local communities. A number of post offices or mail centres have staff committed to local community programs such as tree planting and fundraising for charities such as Juvenile Diabetes, The Smith Family, the Heart Foundation, etc. To support our staff Post has implemented programs such as equal opportunity, harassment, diversity, indigenous employment, etc. and specialist areas such as the introduction of a men's help line, a work life balance initiative and others.
In accordance with the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, Post is also now implementing a structured Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) program.
Of the actions and programs identified as fundamental to this ESD program, many are actually already in place or in development. New initiatives are to be progressively introduced as program details and appropriate implementation strategies are finalised.
