Australia Post's major environmental risk lies in the numerous underground fuel storage tanks (UST) and associated refuelling facilities servicing Post's 10,000+ vehicle fleet. Fuel tanks are also necessary for the back up generators required to ensure that mail processing and delivery operations are not disrupted in the event of power failure.
A major assessment of each site has determined the current state of all Post UST installations, including site attributes, extent of equipment and current management practices. A national program is now under way to bring all facilities into line with the most stringent of State EPA standards.
Any UST no longer required is removed, and wherever practicable the site is restored to its original condition.
