The objective of Phase 1 is for all organisations to answer the "Mail Type" question on lodgement documentation or in e-LMS, by indicating the main purpose of the mailing as "Promotional", "Transactional" or "Unknown".
Status to date
Data collection commenced in January 2005. Refer to the attached report for Promotional, Transactional and Unclassified Mail volumes and percentages. Australia Post is committed to assisting organisations overcome any issues impeding their ability to accurately classify mail.
Mail Type Reference Guide
The "Mail Type Reference Guide" was designed to assist mail generators accurately answer the “Mail Type” question on bulk mail lodgement documentation. The Guide enables a quick and easy assessment of the main purpose of mailings to determine if it’s "Promotional” or “Transactional” in nature.
Classifying mail as “Promotional” or “Transactional” can be open to interpretation and ambiguity. This Guide seeks to list the various “mail type” purposes and their “Promotional” or “Transactional” classification.
