Christmas cards in the post is what we like the most

Wednesday, 28 November 2007

Australians are expected to post a record volume of Christmas mail this year, prompting Australia Post to encourage people to post their Christmas cards early.

This Christmas, Australia Post expects to deliver 470 million mail articles across Australia compared to 450 million
items in 2006. So to beat the rush, Australia Post encourages all Australians to post their Christmas cards early to allow family and friends time to enjoy their Christmas greetings for longer.

According to Melanie Powell, National Communications Manager, Australia Post, recent research commissioned by
Australia Post shows the tradition of giving Christmas cards is still well and truly alive.

“The vast majority of Australians prefer to receive Christmas cards in the mail, rather than receiving their Christmas
greetings by sms or email,” said Ms Powell.

“The results also showed that if people receive Christmas cards, they are more likely to then send a Christmas card
back. That’s a good reason to send your card early,” she said.

The study, conducted by Sweeney Research in August 2007, found that 89 per cent of people look forward to
receiving Christmas cards and almost 60 per cent of people send lots of Christmas cards each year.

You can help your local postie deliver your Christmas wishes in plenty of time by remembering to:

  1. Make sure all the addresses you have are up-to-date.
  2. When addressing envelopes or parcels, ensure they are written clearly with the correct postcode.
  3. Always include a return address.
  4. Do not send cash in the mail; use a cheque or a money order.
  5. If you are sending a package, or large letter, ensure you pay the correct postage. Your local post office will be able to assist.
  6. When choosing Christmas cards, remember to select standard card sizes (no larger than 130mm x 240mm) to qualify for the discounted 45c stamp rate within Australia, and the $1.10 stamp rate for overseas).
  7. For further information about Christmas postal rates, delivery times or tips on correct packaging, see the staff at your local Australia Post outlet, telephone 13 13 18 or visit www.auspost.com.au.

The Golden Rules of Christmas Card Etiquette

1.   Update your mailing list: Regularly update your mailing list so all of the correct details of your contacts are readily available for your Christmas card mail-out.
2. Write a personal message: Personalise your greetings by taking the time to add your handwritten signature and a short message.
3. Be sensitive to traditions: Check whether the recipients of your Christmas card actually  observe Christmas. If they observe other traditions, choose a generic greeting card with a message such as "Season's Greetings".
4.
Avoid the rush: Start planning your Christmas cards now, and post your greeting cards in time to ensure your family and friends have time to enjoy them.
5. Be green this Christmas: Consider using cards and envelopes made from recycled paper or purchasing Christmas cards from a charity as a way of contributing to those in need at Christmas.
6. Check your envelopes: Remember to write clearly, include the correct postcode, always put your name and address on the back, and seal your envelopes. (You can check postcodes at auspost.com.au, under ‘Postcode Search’).
7. Package parcels carefully: use plenty of padding if sending a Christmas gift with your card.
