Applying for a passport

Australia Post provides a range of passport services on behalf of the Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade including:

  • applications for Australian passports
  • renewals of Australian passports
  • distribution of application forms
  • interviewing applicants
  • collection of passport fees
  • delivery of passport documents

Australia Post does not issue passports. This is the responsibility of the Passports Office within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Contact passports.gov.au.

To apply for a passport:

  • gather the relevant documentation as per the application form
  • make an appointment at the post office for your interview.

All passport applicants, except those under 18 years of age and unmarried, must personally attend a passport interview.

What you need

All passport applicants need to prove their Australian citizenship. You will need to have the following to submit at your interview:

  • the completed application form.
  • an original document that proves you are an Australian citizen. All documents must be full originals (not extracts) as supplied by the issuing authority. This document must be either a:
     - full Australian birth certificate (if born after 20 August 1986, you will also need evidence that one parent was an Australian citizen or permanent resident at the time of your birth); or
 - Australian citizenship certificate; and
 -   documents (originals and photocopies) that explain all name changes you have had since birth.  Passports are issued in your birth (or citizenship) name unless you have formally registered another name with the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
  • two (2) new identical photographs of you, one endorsed and signed by the person providing the proof of identity on your application.
  • other documents that confirm your identity and residential address, e.g. drivers licence, credit cards, utilities bills etc.
  • Payment for your passport.

Remember...

  • Not all Australia Post outlets conduct passport interviews on request, so please check beforehand.
  • All passport applicants, except those that are under 18 years of age and unmarried, must personally attend a passport interview.
  • All documents must be full originals (not extracts) as supplied by the issuing authority.
