Australia Post must comply with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Technical Instructions for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air which governs the transportation of lithium batteries by air mail.
The ICAO Technical Instructions provide that all lithium batteries are dangerous goods and cannot be carried in the mail by air.
Consequently, Australia Post can only accept lithium batteries or devices containing lithium batteries for transport within Australia by road.
Australia Post cannot accept lithium batteries or devices containing lithium batteries for mailing overseas or for domestic air carriage.
To help you understand the changes Australia Post has developed guidelines which set out the requirements that must be met when posting lithium batteries or items containing them, including watches, clocks, mobile phones and MP3 players.
