Highlights included implementing Post’s first national recycling program, winning the prestigious Australasian Fleet Managers Association (AFMA) Fleet Environment Protection Award, and expanding our use of rail services to move mail.
Reducing greenhouse gases

Post recorded greenhouse gas emission savings of 23.5 per cent, which equates to total savings of 80,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent since the corporation joined the Federal Government’s co-operative Greenhouse Challenge program in July 1998. The corporation anticipates a 4.8 per cent reduction, or 15,927 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, in 2001–2002. We expect an overall annual reduction of 143,800 tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2005.

Waste management

A national waste management contract was put in place to consolidate all hard waste collection from Post’s facilities, including security disposal, pest control and contaminant disposal. This has resulted in immediate cost savings, with further savings projected over the next 18 months. It also supports Post’s Greenhouse Challenge initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Alternative energy

Post converted one of its Victorian delivery trucks to run on LPG (propane) gas as part of its ongoing trial of alternative fuels. As with Post’s Compressed Natural Gas Vehicle in its NSW fleet, there is much to resolve before gas becomes a viable alternative to liquid fuels. Exploring energy conservation alternatives, Post installed photovoltaic fuel cells at its Tewantin Retail Shop in Queensland. This initiative will feed “green energy” into the Queensland power grid.
