PHILATELIC HIGHLIGHTS
- revenue up by 64 per cent to $113 million ($69 million previously) due to Post's Olympic Games - related issues;
- record sales of both stamps and coins;
- production of world-first "instant" stamps, our Australian Gold Medallists series; and
- winning the International Olympic Committee's "Prix Olympia 2000" for the best Olympic stamp in 2000.
OLYMPICS ISSUES
Post's Olympic and Paralympic stamp issues were a major success. The highlight of our Olympic stamp program was the issue of a stamp featuring each Australian gold medal winner within 24 hours of the medal being won. This was a world first, and used the latest digital printing technology.
We were delighted to win the International Olympic Committee's "Prix Olympia 2000" award. Our winning stamp design showed Cathy Freeman lighting the Olympic Flame during the Opening Ceremony.
The export market was also strong, with $4 million worth of Olympic stamps sold into China alone.
As Post was responsible for more than half the Olympic coins sold in the year, some $11 million worth, we were, for a time, the nation's largest coin retailer.
OTHER IMPORTANTS STAMP ISSUES
The categories of living people featured on stamps were extended as winners of the Victoria Cross were featured on an issue to commemorate the centenary of the first Australian Victoria Cross.
Space was the theme for Stamp Collecting Month (SCM) in October 2000, our very popular program aimed at promoting stamp collecting by primary school children. Our sci-fi approach to the stamp design was welcomed by children.
This was the seventh successive year of record SCM sales.
Two stamp issues were released in association with the Centenary of Federation.
A memorial stamp issue was released in March 2001 to honour the life of Australian champion cricketer, Sir Donald Bradman. It was produced within two weeks of his death.
OVERSEAS PARTNERING
A joint stamp issue with Hong Kong, China, with two stamps featuring dragon boat racing, was released in June 2001. The issue recognised the important cultural and philatelic links between China and Australia.
LOCAL PARTNERING
Post is an important part of the Australian graphic design industry. Our in-house design studio commissions some 12 to 14 external designers every year to design stamps.
