As part of its commitment to corporate citizenship and social responsibility, Post continues to support a number of projects, events and organisations throughout the nation. RURAL AND REGIONAL Post's many sponsorships in rural and remote communities include the Rural Youth Ambassador scheme (run by the Western Australian Royal Agricultural Society), the Tidy Towns Bush Spirit Award (an initiative of the Keep Australia Beautiful Council in Queensland) and ongoing involvement with the School of the Air network (see opposite). Specific sponsorships included the regional Victorian tour of the Ordinary Women/Extraordinary Lives exhibition and the Yeperenye Festival in Alice Springs, hosted by the Arrente people of the Northern Territory to commemorate the elements that unite indigenous cultures across Australia. Post initiated the Australia Post Bell Shakespeare Scholarship for Dramatic Performance, enabling two aspiring actors from regional communities to attend a week-long Sydney workshop with Bell Shakespeare actors. ENVIRONMENT Initiatives include Post supplying postie "buggies" to BP's Green Collect program in which unemployed people collect corks from Melbourne venues for recycling into floors. This removes it from the waste stream and reduces the need for new cork. EDUCATION Post continued to provide Australian schools with free resource materials such as the Amazing Mail booklet sent to every primary school, and maintained its sponsorship of National Literacy and Numeracy Week. Post partnered the publisher Scholastic Australia in creating the Read Around Australia program to encourage youth literacy. Promoted through primary schools nationally, the program offers young students the chance to buy a Scholastic Bookclub book half price. HEALTH Post's contribution included continued support for melanoma research through the Royal Australasian College of Physicians' Research and Education Foundation, and continued support for, and involvement with, Breast Cancer Network Australia. THE ARTS Post, a founding member of the Australia Business Arts Foundation (AbaF) continued creating long-term partnerships with the arts community, including sponsorship of the Sydney Festival and others, including the Canberra Multicultural Festival and Adelaide Festival. Post again sponsored The Bell Shakespeare Company's annual national regional tour which, in 2001-02, took The Tempest to 27 locations, from Moonee Ponds in Victoria to South Headland in Western Australia. BUSINESS Post sponsored AbaF's Gold Book of Business/Arts Partnerships 2001, a case study-based guide for business on how they can partner arts bodies for mutual benefit. Post continued sponsoring the Australian Direct Marketing Association (ADMA) awards through the Australia Post Winged Messenger Award for the best use of direct mail. Post was also inaugural sponsor of the Regional Exporter of the Year Award recognising outstanding export achievement in rural areas. SPORT Post continued encouraging youth participation in team sport in both metropolitan and regional areas through programs such as Connecting Youth to Opportunity (including Brisbane Bronco-led junior coaching clinics in south-west Queensland) and the Spirit West Lightning Partnership (a football "round robin" competition for secondary schools in Melbourne's western region). Post continued to sponsor the Australia Post Stawell Gift, the nation's top professional foot race, as it celebrated its 125th anniversary and contributed approximately $1.5 million to the local economy. Post continued supporting the National Aboriginal Sports Corporation and, at 30 June 2002, was working on its sponsorship of the Australian Team at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, UK. AUSTRALIA DAY Five prominent medical scientists - Sir Gustav Nossal, Professor Nancy Millis, Professor Peter Doherty, Professor Fiona Stanley and Professor Donald Metcalf - received Post's 2002 Australian Legends Award, with stamps produced in their honour. The announcement is made on Australia Day, and is part of Post's principal sponsorship of the National Australia Day Council.
