150 Years of Australian Football
28 June - 4 October 2008
curated by Richard Breckon
Australian Football had its origins in Victoria 150 years ago when the rules of the game were devised, and the first football clubs were established, these being Melbourne (1858-59) and Geelong (1859). "Australian Rules" Football quickly developed into a popular community pastime, supported by enthusiastic team followers. Until recent times, the game's appeal was largely confined to Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania. The game now embraces New South Wales and Queensland – the two states where for many years the Rugby codes were more dominant than is the case today. The "Play On" exhibition showcases the evolution of Australian Football over 150 years. More information on the "PLAY ON: 150 Years of Australian Football" exhibition.
