Digital Certificates

KeyPost is a Registration Authority (RA), accredited by the Federal Government to perform identity authentication of individuals and organisations applying to a Certification Authority (CA's) for a digital certificate.

A digital certificate is a mechanism to secure electronic messages and transactions conducted over the Internet.

The process of acquiring a digital certificate begins on-line at the CA’s web site and requires the applicant to fill out an application form on-screen.  The applicant must then bring the printed form(s) and evidence of their identity (and photocopies) to a KeyPost Outlet. Australia Post advises the CA of the successful completion of the identity checking process and the digital certificate is then generated and delivered by the CA.

Further details are available at the following CA websites:

National Visits Media Cards

KeyPost conducts identity authentication checks on behalf of the Attorney General's Department for media representatives that require a National Visits Media Card (NVMC).  The card confirms that the holder is a person with a legitimate media interest in the visits of foreign dignitaries.

The applicant must bring the form and the required supporting material (and photocopies) to a KeyPost outlet.  Australia Post advises the Attorney General of the successful completion of the identity checking process and the NVMC is then issued by the Attorney General.

The NVMC application form can be obtained and filled out on-line at:

The Application Process

The process is similar for all applications and begins on-line by accessing the web site of the relevant organisation where detailed instructions for completing the process can be found.  The applicant is required to take the form(s) along with original documents of evidence of their identity (EOI) including photocopies to a KeyPost Outlet for a face-to-face interview.  See below for a full listing of KeyPost Outlets.

The role of the retail counter officer is to perform an identity check similar to the 100-point check process for opening a bank account.

On completion of the processing at the counter, the counter officer forwards the forms, certified copies of the EOI and a duplicate receipt to the KeyPost Service Centre in Melbourne via normal mail.  The KeyPost Service Centre carries out further verification steps and advises the business partner of the outcome of the identity authentication process.

Please Note: KeyPost forms are not kept on hand at any KeyPost office. All application forms are generated on-line by the applicant from their own computer via the Business Partner’s web site, and all application forms and supporting documentation are brought to the Authorised KeyPost outlet by the applicant.
